5 Stars!
I LOVED this book. I’m not one to frivolously hype a book that is undeserving, but if I could give this one ten stars I would.
It’s
1897 and Anita is returning to Vassar College as a senior. For years
she’s led a double life, as the quiet but beautiful white daughter of a
well to do Boston Lawyer, and her true self, the African-American
daughter of Southern mulattos who are barely educated and scrimp and
save to afford her education. If anyone were to find out she would be
ruined.
Everything changes when it turns out her new roommate is
none other than Lottie Taylor, a loud and rich socialite who is
determined to make their senior year the Best Year Ever. As the girls
become fast friends Anita has never had more fun, nor has she ever seen
the possibilities of what her life could truly be if she continues to
pass for white after graduation. But as she gets deeper into her lie,
she realizes just how much she stands to lose.
This is an excellent historic fiction that is based on a true story. It is also soon to become a movie starring Zendaya, who is producing it along with Reece Witherspoon! I just grabbed it off the library shelf on a whim and I am so glad I did. This may be my favorite book of the year!!
