I primarily chose to read this book to satisfy the "Winter Setting Cover" prompt on a reading challenge I am participating in on Facebook but I ended up loving it. It is a dark, witchy, magical combination of Russian folklore and history set in a northern village in what I assume is Siberia. While this is technically the first in a trilogy by the end I was left feeling entirely satisfied and I don't really feel the urge to read the other two books. I'm not sure if that is a ringing endorsement for the the author or not but it is intended as such. So many books these days leave you really wanting and this one was just wrapped up in such a neat little package. I appreciate that.
I will say that this book was a real slow burner and the first 25 percent of the book was a little maddening. It took me two nights to read the first quarter of the book and about 3 hours to read the rest. It was like a pringles can, Once you pop, you just can't stop!
