Getting Tarred and (Nearly) Feathered in the Name of Beauty

I will never forget the first time I was finally allowed to dye my hair, it was about a week before school started - 7th grade. I decided I HAD to be blonde and Mom finally agreed to dye it for me. I was picturing a cool white blonde...what I got was closer to orange.

I loved it.
I was so proud walking in to see all my friends and to meet my teachers, it may have been orange but the color was less important than what it represented. I was old enough to make decisions about my appearance and to start becoming who I wanted to be.
Over the years my hair has been pretty much every shade of blonde possible, has been dyed with koolaid countless times, streaked with whatever makeup I could get my hands on, coated with glitter and been made to stand up in spikes with Elmer's glue. I'm not saying these were good choices, but they were mine none the less. These days my natural hair is turning red, not a change I expected or approve of, so I try to keep it dyed a nice dark brown. I use all kinds of at home dye kits, but tend to use L'Oreal more than anything. Recently though I was offered the chance to try Garnier Olia for free in exchange for my honest review via the website Crowdtap.
I received a box of my preferred color, Dark Brown.

According to the box what sets Olia apart from the competition is "Unlike traditional hair color, Olia uses an exclusive 60% oil blend, with natural flower oils [...] without Ammonia, with a pleasant sensorial fragrance". Needless to say, I was intrigued to see how well it would work.

Inside the box was all the usual stuff, the developer, colorant, conditioner, the applicator, gloves (unpictured) and the instructions.

My Perspective:
  •  Love the shape of the applicator bottle, the opening is plenty wide enough to easily pour in and mix the developer and colorant. The shape of the bottle feels very nice in the hand and allows for easy application. It also is nice aesthetically. Rating 5/5
  • The gloves come in a little baggie vs being glued to the paper as most are. They are a nicer quality than what most dyes come with, a thicker matte black glove. They were nicely sized for me but for someone with larger hands they may have been a little tight/difficult to get on, especially around the knuckles/base of your hand. Rating 4.5/5
  • The floral oil and no ammonia claims seem to actually be accurate, there is only the slightest floral scent, and none of the strong burning smell often associated with dye. Rating 5/5
  • Texturally it was unexpected, I thought because of the oil claim it would be more liquid-y/runny, but it was really nice, like a good conditioner. It went on white and didn't start changing color until several minutes into the process. Rating 4/5
  • As it set, it started 'setting up' and according to my family, started taking on the appearance of tar. Someone threatened to get the feathers. Rating 2/5
  • In the instructions it said that before rinsing you should use gloved hands to massage your hair and scalp to allow for better rinsing. I thought this was really strange but did it, and was thankful I did. The 'tar' had sort of created a shell and you had to massage it to make it fluid again, and for some reason my hair was VERY tangled. This was mystifying to me because I brushed my hair right before dying it and my hair doesn't tangle naturally. Rating -5/5
  • When I got in the shower and the water hit it, the tangles sort of matted, like a dolls knotty hair. At this point I was very concerned and questioning what I had done to myself. As more dye was rinsed out the tangles stayed and my hair, although wet, was feeling very dry. The concern continued.
  • Upon applying the included conditioner - and I used the whole tube - my fears started to lessen, the conditioner was nice and thick and creamy and more importantly, instantly managed to get through those weird tangles. If it wasn't for that I probably would have been crying right now instead of happily writing this blog.  Rating 4/5
  • After drying my hair, instead of the 'visibly healthier hair' I was promised on the box, my hair looked dry and brittle. Rating 0/5
Before/After

I will say I am very happy with the color though. I'm not sure that the pros outweigh the cons however, so I am unsure if I would purchase this in the future.
