This
book has just about everything you could ask for in terms of a
western/pioneer tale. Strong characters, plenty of trials and
tribulations, family feuds, heartbreak and betrayal, gunfights and a
really good horse.
I really appreciated that Mary was valued for more
than just a pretty face and her breeding hips and was encouraged to go to school for something
as seemingly trivial as art, especially because her father was so
supportive. You don't typically see that kind of opportunity and support freely
given in books like this, obviously because of how rare it was during the time period, so this book is really unique from that perspective. Mary is such a strong willed character and her strength in the face of adversity was just as inspiring to read about as it was heartbreaking. I devoured this book, and read it in one sitting.
Plus, look at that cover! 😍
This book does have some potentially triggering situations, namely a sexual assault, so be mindful of that before picking this one up. Thanks very much to Netgalley and the Publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own.
