This book was a lot different than I expected. Honestly I am not sure what I expected but it wasn't this. But thats okay, because I try and go into books as blindly as possible. And I really liked this one. It is set in Chicago during WWII at a home for orphaned or displaced children. However it is primarily told from the perspective of an observer in the form of a ghost. In that it was slightly reminiscent of The Book Thief but without the profound soul destroying poignancy.
There was something so satisfying about the underlying theme of revenge throughout this book. When it all came together in the end I was left kind of in awe, like equal parts of what did I just read and HECK YEAH YOU GO GIRL. There is a lot of tragic story lines intertwined throughout this book and it could have gone really wrong, but I think that the author handled it very well. I am interested to see what else she writes in the future. I was also really shocked and pleased and angry to find out that part of the book, all the bits without the ghosts, was based on the true story of the authors family members. What a terrible situation.
